Art & Soul of Georgia’s Mountains
Cleveland, Ga. – The creativity and entrepreneurship of White County businesses is evident as they pool their resources as they kicked off a multimedia campaign beginning with the popular Antiques Roadshow April 16 on Georgia Public Broadcasting.
Filmed in Atlanta in August 2011, the Roadshows’ staff, appraisers and volunteers herded 6,000 people and their “prized possessions” numbering almost 12,000 for evaluation of being either trinkets or treasures. A special Antiques Roadshow Atlanta: Behind the Scenes follows at 9 p.m., which gives viewers an idea of what it takes for participants to get from being in the back of the appraisal line to being on-camera to share their story.
White County, rich with legendary artists and entrepreneurs, like Xavier Roberts and Folk Pottery Family Dynasties, is fertile ground which is a magnet attracting visionaries blazing new paths from gourd crafts to wineries. The combined energy of these people and local businesses are committed to making an investment for the future of White County. They are looking for ways to invite more partners to join the effort to “Bring More Business To Our Businesses.”
The major investment for this initial $20,000 campaign came from the Alpine Helen White County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the White County Chamber of Commerce and BabyLand General Hospital. The partnership includes investment from the Folk Pottery Museum, Nacoochee Village Merchants Association, The Gourd Place, Old Sautee Store, Innsbruck Golf Course & Igla Resort Villas, Sautee Nacoochee Community Association, Yonah Mountain Vineyards, Sautee Nacoochee Vineyards, Frogtown Cellars and Habersham Vineyards & Winery, Cool River Tubing and the White County Historical Society. The Antiques Roadshow is the perfect place to kick off the campaign which promotes the Art and Soul of Georgia’s Mountains. Appealing to viewers in Atlanta who would enjoy the history and art of our area are within the range of just a tank of gas. The television schedule branches out with Georgia Traveler, Georgia Outdoor, and This Day in Georgia History. The multimedia campaign includes spot sponsorships on NPR National Public Radio as well as the GPB website www.gpb.org.
The partnership is working on a printed piece and have plans to work together to attract Group Tours.
“What makes this partnership exciting is that everyone involved is willing to share their “heart and soul,” invest their time and effort to help each other grow,” said Margaret McLean, Director of Corporate Communications with BabyLand General Hospital.
Unlike major cities, which have many large hotels, restaurant chains, businesses and corporations to support their marketing efforts, this small group, pulled together in the last two months, understood the urgency of the upcoming summer season, the window of opportunity, and the need to cross promote and work together in this tough economy.

See Collectible Cabbage Patch Kids At The Legendary FAO Schwarz Fifth Avenue
New York, NY – Two highly collectible Cabbage Patch Kids were invited to the Big Apple to take part in a special display called “A Gallery of Historic Toys” honoring FAO Schwarz’s 150th Anniversary.
“The gallery honors the legacy of FAO Schwarz as a purveyor of extraordinary toys and a brand synonymous with quality and innovation. Cabbage Patch Kids were invited to participate because they are one of the most recognized brands in the world,” said Sr. PR Manager Bob Friedland.
Launching a year of celebration and recognition for the storied retailer, Frederick August Otto Schwarz, founder of the famed toy store, was inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame by the Toy Industry Association (TIA) on Feb. 11, 2012.
These special Cabbage Patch Kids will be on display at FAO Schwarz Fifth Avenue through Tuesday, April 10 alongside more than 25 of the best known toy brands ever created such as G.I. JOE, Playmobil, Silly Putty, and Mr. Potato Head. Those that are not able to go to FAO Schwarz can still see the Cabbage Patch Kids in “A Gallery of Historic Toys” online at FAO.com.
One of the special babies on display is Otis Lawton. He is a hand-stitched, Original Cabbage Patch Kid from the archives of Cabbage Patch Kid Creator Xavier Roberts. Delivered as a work of art, Otis Lawton has a Birth Certificate and Adoption Papers as his “Certificate of Authenticity”.
Following the official change in name from Little People® to Cabbage Patch Kids® in 1982, Otis Lawton belongs to the first hand-sculpted edition of Original Cabbage Patch Kids released by Original Appalachian Artworks, Xavier Robert’s company. Otis Lawton is a namesake of Otis Lee. Considered priceless, the real Otis Lee, is the only adopted son of Xavier Roberts and makes appearances during special occasions at BabyLand General® Hospital, Home of the Cabbage Patch Kids in Cleveland, Ga. Other early, highly collectible babies from the period have been “re-adopted” for as much as $30,000 to $50,000.
Delila Lorinda is one of the first 1983 toy versions of Cabbage Patch Kids from the archives of Original Appalachian Artworks Inc. That year the adoptable, vinyl-faced toy version of Cabbage Patch Kids made history as the most successful doll launch ever. Even with the delivery of 2.5 million babies, the Cabbage Patch could not meet the demand.
